Overview
Stump grinding uses a specialist grinding wheel to chew a tree stump — and its main roots — down to below ground level. Depending on what's going in its place, we grind to 150mm below surface for turf, 300mm+ for planting, and deeper again for hard landscaping or drives. What's left is a hole filled with grindings that can be topped up with soil or removed and backfilled.

As soon as you know the space is needed. There's no benefit to leaving a stump 'to rot away naturally' — that takes years, encourages honey fungus, and often heaves the ground as the roots decay.
Old stumps are the perfect host for Armillaria (honey fungus), one of the most damaging soil pathogens in UK gardens. They also harbour wood-boring insects, block digging, refuse to accept new planting, and eventually collapse into an uneven mess. Grinding removes both the visible stump and the primary root mass in a single visit.

Leaving a stump in the ground is a slow-motion problem — invisible until you try to build, plant or lay anything over it.
Decaying stumps are a primary reservoir for Armillaria, which can infect and kill nearby healthy trees, shrubs and hedging.
Species like cherry, lime, willow, poplar and false acacia throw suckers from residual roots for years after the tree comes down.
You can't lay a good lawn, patio, drive or planting bed on top of a decomposing root mass — everything eventually sinks or lifts.

The two most common mistakes are trying to dig a stump out with a spade (which almost never works and usually damages the surrounding ground more than the stump did), and pouring stump-killer chemicals that take years to work and still leave the physical stump in place.

You confirm known service runs (electric, water, gas, comms). We plan the cut depth and pattern to stay well clear.
The grinder is walked into position and works methodically across the stump and outer roots to the depth agreed for your intended use.
Grindings can be raked back into the void as backfill, spread as mulch elsewhere on site, or removed under our waste carrier registration — you choose.

The right depth is entirely about what's going on top.
We size the grinder to the job. Narrow-access machines fit through a 750mm gate for tight rear gardens; larger self-propelled grinders handle bigger stumps and reduce site time. Where a stump is in a lawn, we'll use ground boards to protect the turf during the work.
Grinding stops well clear of any known service run, hard structure or shared boundary. If you're unsure where services enter the property, tell us — we'd rather work around a marked line than find one mid-cut. On boundary stumps we grind to the property line only.
You have three practical options. Backfill into the void gives a stable, slightly organic mix that will settle over a few months. Spread as mulch, grindings work well around larger shrubs and trees. Removed off-site under our Environment Agency waste carrier registration is the cleanest finish for hard landscaping projects.

Almost always yes. Very large mature-oak or beech stumps just take longer; extremely tight access can limit machine size but rarely rules it out.
Standard is 150mm below surface for lawn. We go deeper for planting, hardscaping or driveways — you tell us what's going in and we grind to suit.
The trunk and primary roots are ground out. Some species (cherry, lime, willow, poplar, false acacia) can throw suckers from further-out lateral roots — we can advise on treatment if that's a concern.
