Overview
Tree felling is bringing a whole tree down in one, cut cleanly from the base. It's the fastest and cheapest way to remove a tree — but it needs space. Where a suburban garden doesn't allow it, section dismantling (see tree removal) is the safer route. Felling is most often used on rural properties, paddocks, larger gardens, woodland edges and development sites.
Landowners, farmers, estate managers, developers and homeowners with genuine open ground; anyone clearing wind-damaged trees on grazing land; and commercial sites removing multiple trees prior to groundworks.
When there is a clear drop zone at least the height of the tree, no valuable targets in the fall line, and either the tree is being fully removed or a mixed clearance is planned. Also used routinely after major windthrow events where multiple trees are already partially uprooted.
A controlled fell looks simple from a distance. In practice it's precise: reading the tree's natural lean and weight, choosing hinge geometry, cutting the notch and back cut to the right depth, and using wedges or a pulling line to guide the fall exactly where you want it. Get the hinge wrong and the tree goes where physics wants it to go, not where you planned.
What happens if it's ignored
A fell that goes wrong is loud, expensive and dangerous — and the damage is done in the two seconds it takes the tree to hit the ground.
A misjudged hinge sends the tree off-line — through a fence, a shed, a vehicle or worse.
Cutting a leaning tree without a proper hinge can cause the trunk to split vertically and kick backwards — a mechanism responsible for many chainsaw fatalities.
A poorly directed fell can shatter branches on adjacent trees, opening up decay entry points and years of secondary damage.
Felling a TPO tree without consent — even accidentally — can result in significant fines and enforcement.
A felled tree still needs processing. Without a proper crew and chipper, you'll be looking at that pile for weeks.
The commonest mistake is felling a tree that never had room to be felled — because 'it looked like enough space' — and then having to pay for both the fell and the damage. If a section dismantle is safer, we'll say so, even though it costs more.

Felling suits open, rural or semi-rural sites with a clear drop zone. It doesn't suit tight suburban gardens surrounded by houses, glass, fencing and boundaries. On tight sites, section dismantling — bringing the tree down piece by piece from the top — is the safer, standard approach, even though it's slower and more expensive.
Directional felling relies on a properly cut hinge — a strip of uncut wood that acts like the pivot on a door.
